Cab services have become an essential part of urban life in India, as rising traffic congestion has led many commuters to abandon personal driving and rely on cabs. This has resulted in a surge in demand for services like Ola, Uber, and Rapido, which has in turn led to higher fares and frequent changes in their rules, causing inconvenience to users. Uncertainty over cab availability and bookings has also become a common problem.
To address these challenges, the government-backed Bharat Taxi service is being introduced by Sahakar Taxi Cooperative Limited. The new service will operate on a zero-commission model and aims to provide an alternative to private cab operators. Cars, auto-rickshaws, and bikes will be available through the platform, which will launch as a user-friendly mobile app on both Android and iOS. Users can register with their mobile numbers, select pickup and drop-off locations, choose rides, and track their journeys in real time. The app also features transparent fare structures, a multilingual interface, and 24×7 customer support. Bharat Taxi is scheduled to debut in Delhi from January 1.
The platform is also designed to benefit drivers. Built on a cooperative model, it offers better working conditions and higher earnings, with drivers receiving up to 80 percent of the fare directly. A monthly credit system has been established to facilitate payments, providing drivers with an independent and equal alternative to private companies.
So far, 56,000 drivers have registered with Bharat Taxi. After Delhi, the service will expand to Rajkot, Gujarat, and gradually to other cities across the country, offering commuters a reliable, government-supported option in the rapidly growing urban mobility sector.
