Vadodara: Even before its full-fledged nationwide rollout, India’s Bharat Taxi — billed as the world’s first national ride-hailing mobility cooperative fully owned by drivers — emerged as the world’s largest driver-owned mobility collective.Promoted by eight major national cooperatives, the Sahakar Taxi Cooperative Limited already onboarded over 51,000 drivers across Delhi and Gujarat’s Saurashtra region in just 10 days. This makes Bharat Taxi significantly larger than The Driver’s Cooperative in New York, a driver-owned ride-sharing platform launched in 2020 with around 4,000 members.Tuesday marked a milestone in India’s mobility sector as the beta consumer trials began in New Delhi, with driver-members activating services on the Bharat Taxi app. The app is now live on the Google Play Store for public trials; the iOS version will follow shortly, officials said.“We began the beta consumer trials in Delhi today and the response is overwhelming,” said Jayen Mehta, chairman, Sahakar Taxi Cooperative Ltd.
