New expressway: Meerut, Chief Correspondent. Meerut is about to witness another major transportation revolution. After the grand gift of Namo Bharat and Meerut Metro, the Ganga Expressway, connecting western Uttar Pradesh to Purvanchal, is now very close to becoming operational. According to the latest report from UPEIDA, the construction of this ambitious project from Meerut to Prayagraj is 100% complete. Currently, only finishing touches such as signage and road markings are being finalized, which will be completed in the next few days. Once completed, the distance from Meerut to Prayagraj can be covered in six hours instead of 12.
Trial runs underway, awaiting government approval
The 594-kilometer expressway, being built from Meerut to Prayagraj, is fully ready for commissioning. According to officials, trial runs are currently underway on various sections of the Ganga Expressway to thoroughly examine safety standards, the condition of curves, and road quality. The official inauguration date is awaited from the government, and the department is fully prepared to open it to the public by March-April 2026. The administration has already begun ground-level preparations to ensure a grand opening ceremony.
A New Corridor of Economic Development and Strategic Importance
This expressway is not just a road, but will prove to be a lifeline, giving Uttar Pradesh’s economic corridor a new boost. This 594-kilometer expressway will connect 12 districts, including Meerut, Hapur, Bulandshahr, Amroha, Sambhal, Badaun, Shahjahanpur, Hardoi, Unnao, Rae Bareli, Pratapgarh, and Prayagraj. Another significant feature is the airstrip constructed in Shahjahanpur, which can be used for landing Air Force fighter jets in case of war or emergency. There are also plans to develop industrial clusters, food processing units, and warehouses along the expressway, creating millions of new employment opportunities for local youth.
High-Tech Safety and Green Expressway Model
For safety, the Ganga Expressway has been equipped with an Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS), which will monitor speeding and accidents. Emergency call boxes and ambulance services have been provided every 10 kilometers along the expressway. Additionally, millions of trees have been planted along both sides to make it a “green expressway,” helping to maintain environmental balance. For the convenience of travelers traveling on the expressway, modern wayside amenities (WSA) have also been developed, offering world-class dining and recreational facilities.
Meerut to Prayagraj: Now the journey will take just 6 hours, not 12.
Currently, it takes 11 to 12 hours for travelers to travel from Meerut to Prayagraj via the National Highway. However, with the opening of the Ganga Expressway, this journey will be reduced to just 6 hours. With a design speed of 100 to 120 km per hour, this route will not only provide faster travel but also significantly save fuel. This connectivity will make it much easier for people from Meerut and Delhi-NCR to reach the Sangam city of Prayagraj, providing an unprecedented boost to both tourism, Kumbh Mela connectivity, and trade.
