A powerful 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck Taiwan on Saturday, according to local weather agency.It was recorded 32.3 km East of Yilan County Hall, at a depth 72.8km at 11:05 pm local time.The Yilan County Fire Bureau told AFP that there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage. Although local media said the quake caused buildings in the capital, Taipei, to sway and was felt across Taiwan.Taiwan is prone to frequent earthquakes as it lies at the boundary of two tectonic plates near the Pacific Ring of Fire, which the USGS describes as the world’s most seismically active zone. Just days ago, a magnitude 6 quake hit Taitung county.In April 2024, a 7.4-magnitude quake killed 17 people after triggering landslides and causing severe damage to buildings around Hualien city. Officials at the time described it as Taiwan’s strongest earthquake in 25 years.It was the most powerful quake to hit the island since the 7.6-magnitude tremor in 1999, the deadliest natural disaster in Taiwan’s history.
