India’s cooperative ride-hailing platform Bharat Taxi has recorded a strong early response, crossing 2.7 million downloads shortly after its launch. However, despite this impressive start, concerns around pricing are beginning to surface, raising questions about its long-term sustainability in a highly competitive market.
Strong early traction after launch
Launched in February 2026 by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Bharat Taxi entered the mobility space with a cooperative model aimed at benefiting drivers. Unlike platforms such as Uber, Ola, and Rapido, the company does not charge commission per ride. Instead, drivers are treated as stakeholders and can earn a share of the platform’s profits.
The platform has scaled quickly, onboarding over 2.1 million users and more than 2.3 lakh drivers within weeks. It currently operates in regions like Delhi-NCR and parts of Gujarat, including Ahmedabad and Rajkot, indicating rapid early adoption.
Pricing concerns emerge among users
Despite its driver-friendly approach, Bharat Taxi is facing criticism over higher fares. Early comparisons suggest that ride prices are around 20–30% higher than competitors for similar routes. While the platform offers stable pricing without surge fluctuations, users appear to prioritise affordability over consistency.
This pricing gap could become a major challenge, especially in price-sensitive markets like India where users often compare fares before booking.
Can Bharat Taxi sustain momentum?
The Indian ride-hailing market remains intensely competitive, with players like Rapido, Uber, and Ola already well-established. While Bharat Taxi’s cooperative model has attracted attention, sustaining growth will depend on balancing driver earnings with competitive pricing.
Going forward, the company’s ability to refine its pricing strategy and maintain service quality will be key. While the initial traction is promising, addressing user concerns will ultimately determine whether Bharat Taxi can evolve into a strong alternative in India’s ride-hailing ecosystem.
