Bharat Taxi, which was established under the Multi-State Cooperative Societies Act, 2002, has around eight lakh registered drivers and nearly 41 lakh customers by July 25, 2026, according to an official statement today, August 17.
Bharat Tax is India’s first cooperative-led ride-hailing platform, started on June 6, 2025 by eight national cooperative institutions, including NABARD, IFFCO, Amul, NAFED and the National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC).
Bharat Taxi operation model
The platform operates on a zero-commission model, allowing drivers, referred to as Sarathis to retain their fare earnings while participating as member-owners of the cooperative.
According to the government, Bharat Taxi is currently operational in Delhi-NCR, Gujarat, Mumbai, Lucknow, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Kanpur and Pune.
Expansion plans
In addition, the platform plans to expand operations to Ranchi, Patna, Guwahati, Bhopal, Kolkata, Indore and Nagpur in the coming months as part of its phased national rollout.
Bharat Taxi has been structured to give drivers a stake in ownership and governance which means Sarathis can become member-owners by purchasing shares in the cooperative and are represented in its leadership structure through reserved seats on the board.
It offers multiple ride categories, including bike taxis, autos, economy cabs, premium sedans, SUVs, rentals, outstation travel and scheduled rides.
Zero commission financial model
Bharat Taxi operates on a zero-commission, surge-free pricing model. It has been designed as a cooperative alternative to conventional ride-hailing platforms. The cooperative follows a subscription-based model, enabling drivers to retain full fare earnings.
Riders pay only the applicable trip fare based on distance, time, and market conditions. No additional convenience fees, platform fees, or surge pricing are charged through the application.
Under the Bharat Taxi scheme, 20 per cent of the cooperative’s earnings are credited to Bharat Taxi as Sarathis’ capital. The remaining 80 percent is distributed among Sarathis based on the kilometres travelled by their taxis. A 7 per cent service charge is levied only at Bharat Taxi-operated airport prepaid booths to cover operational expenses.
Bharat Taxi’s partnerships
The platform also entered into partnerships with institutions including the Delhi Traffic Police, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, State Bank of India, Paytm and IFFCO Tokio Insurance to strengthen service delivery, digital payments and insurance coverage.
Bharat Taxi said drivers associated with the platform are facilitated to register on the e-Shram portal, enabling access to social security benefits, while additional accident and health insurance support is available through partner institutions.
The platform is supported by the Ministry of Cooperation’s broader push to promote cooperative-based business models and seeks to combine digital mobility services with democratic ownership and economic participation.

Booking a Ride on Bharat Taxi
The Bharat Taxi platform allows passengers to book rides and drivers to register as Sarathis through a simple digital interface. The booking process is designed to be quick and user-friendly. In addition to app-based bookings, Bharat Taxi operates prepaid booths at selected airports for direct ride booking. Additionally, drivers who wish to join the platform as Sarathis can register via the app or website by submitting the required documents and completing onboarding.
